“Charles Darwin: How A Theology Major Discovered Natural Selection”
with Dr. Peter Sinelli
Although Darwin studied medicine and the natural sciences, his only university degree was Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus in Theology. Indeed, he studied to become a clergyman at Cambridge before that “gap” trip on the HMS Beagle got his gears turning about the process of species change over time. Although he had formulated the bulk of his theory of natural selection by the early 1840’s, Origins did not appear in print until nearly two decades later. During this time Darwin struggled to reconcile his own views on science and religion, and faced a number of extraordinary personal challenges. This presentation will focus on how Darwin the human being became one of the greatest scientists in history.
We are a “lay-led” congregation with a different speaker every Sunday morning. We hear from a wide variety of academic, spiritual, and social justice speakers. Our Sunday Services are designed to illuminate different spiritual paths and strengthen our sense of self, family, and community.
