“Civic Education in Florida”
with Terri Susan Fine, Ph.D.
Florida became the first and, to date, the only state in the nation to mandate civic education K-12 (2008) and to include a middle school course and civics test (2010). How did these requirements emerge and what are the consequences for short-and-long-term civic literacy and engagement? More recently, the state has mandated civic literacy exams, first at the college level, already in effect, and soon to be at the high school level. This presentation will clarify how the earlier initiatives (civic education) differ from the latter approach (demonstration of civic literacy) and introduce a few of the political and policy questions surrounding these two education policy initiatives in Florida. Dr. Fine is well-qualified to lead us through an understanding of these policies and how our 5th principle affirmations may be affected.
