TITLE: Information v. Knowledge

DESCRIPTION

Last week, our conversation included a mention of the DIKW pyramid. Wikipedia indicates that a DIKW pyramid represents the “functional relationships between data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. Typically, information is defined in terms of data, knowledge in terms of information, and wisdom in terms of knowledge.” Our exploration of information and/vs knowledge will begin with this concept of the DIKW pyramid.

Next, we will proceed to some ideas by Ludwig Wittgenstein, the Austrian philosopher, who wrote about the use of Language & the nature of Knowledge. One short article summarizes his ideas: we can’t talk about metaphysical ideas because there are no adequate words and, therefore, they might not be worth talking about(!). This might ruffle some feathers in our group, but we’ll try to stay on topic.

Finally, we’ll conclude our discussion with the concept of cognition and how information gets processed into knowledge. The VeryWellMind website notes that “Cognitive psychology seeks to understand all of the mental processes involved in human thought and behavior. It focuses on cognitive processes such as decision-making, problem-solving, attention, memory, learning, and more.” So, it would be redundant to say this will be a thought-provoking meeting! We hope you can join us.

Our Sunday Service at 10:30 – https://universityuus.org/

Speaker: Rev. Dr. Tracie Barrett – Living Our Values With Love At The Center

For the last two years, we have heard about putting love at the center of our Unitarian Universalist faith. What does that mean in our day-to-day lives? Rev. Tracie explores how we can use love as the lens through which we encounter the world and work towards justice and equity for all.

As UUs, we are encouraged to discover and follow our own spiritual path by asking questions and looking deep for answers.
