Critical Thinking Obstacles: Doublespeak and Cancel Culture

This week, we continue our discussion of critical thinking by exploring its major obstacles. In philosophy, we sometimes divide reality into “inner” and “outer” worlds. Consider our inner world: a person could think “where did I learn this?”, or they could manifest arrogance or intolerance, which stops critical thinking. In the outer world: the concept “doublespeak”, which we attribute to Orwell’s book “1984”, is prevalent in real-world politics and advertising. How can we recognize it?

Our reading materials give an overview of these barriers to critical thinking. Plus, an article from The Guardian gives us a recent picture of “cancel culture”. In history, we will also hear from Epictetus (the Greek Stoic philosopher) who advised that we give assent carefully, and Erasmus (the Renaissance philosopher) who wrote a satirical essay “In Praise of Folly” (1511). This will be a fascinating discussion! Please join StoicDan this Sunday to explore the topic of critical thinking and its obstacles. We hope to see you there!
