Faith in Action – Legislative Ministry
The foundation of our UU faith is our principles: to respect the inherent worth and dignity of every person; seek justice, equity, and compassion in human relations, through the democratic process, and respect the interdependent web of all existence. Our Faith in Legislative Ministry is a subset of the Social Action Committee, which focuses on advocating for our values through local, state, and federal legislation and/or regulation.
We partner with Unitarian Universality Justice Florida (UUJF) Unitarian Universalist Justice Florida – Bending Florida toward Justice (uujusticefl.org), which is a statewide justice ministry working with members of 44 UU congregations in Florida and their social justice committees in partnership with other interfaith and public interest organizations to promote justice, equity, and compassion in public policy.
In addition, we partner with the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Justice and Inclusion Justice & Inclusion | UUA.org ministry. There are specific justice ministries for key areas that related directly to our Seven (7) Principles:
- Democratic Equality
- Economic Justice
- Racial Justice
- Immigrant Justice
- Reproductive Justice
- Economic Justice
- Climate and Environmental Justice, and
- LGBTQ Justice
It is important to stay current on proposed legislation at the federal, state, and local levels. Below are two services that you can subscribe to that will help you understand proposed legislation related to our values.
FEDERAL LEVEL - IssueVoter
This is an electronic system that you sign up for, where you select the issues you care about to learn about relevant new bills at the federal level. They summarize the bill, offer pros and cons, and related news for context keeping you informed all year long.
You can directly send your support or objection to the legislation to your representative from the site. In addition, the software tracks your representative’s voting record and the outcome of the bill.
