Dear Gardeners,
I would like to suggest some things that I think would help us in starting
up.
While I believe that it is good advise to "start small", I don't want to
start too small. With 11 members already, we apparently are going to have
a very substantial work force.
Considering the time, effort and expense it will take to get a rototiller, I
sort of doubt that we will want to do it again soon. So I suggest that we
try to do as much as we can. Whatever is not used for our first planting,
can be covered with plastic to "Solar Sterilize" it.
Attached are 2 drawings of possible layouts for raised beds. The one with 8
squares represents conventional 4 ft. x 4 ft. beds and the other with 6
triangles is a more efficient alternative. Both have the same amount of
growing space and the one with triangles occupies slightly less area
overall. With it, there are 14 less pieces of lumber to be cut and 14 fewer
corners (2 screws each) to put together.
